Tottenham finding best way to handle youngsters like Alli in bid to avoid burnout

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has revealed the club is managing the fitness of a handful of young stars to avoid them burning out in the final stages of the Premier League season.

Pochettino admitted Spurs are closely monitoring the condition of starlet Dele Alli, who is carrying knee and ankle injuries, as well as a host of other key players as the business end of the season kicks into gear.

"[Alli] is an incredible athlete, yes. But he is not a machine. He has a problem in his ankle and knee," Pochettino said in the wake of Saturday's 2-2 drew with North London rivals Arsenal.

"We have a lot of players who are young and in their first or second season in the Premier League. It's very tough and we spend a lot of time analysing and to find information to give the best training sessions or recovery or to find the best way to help them.

"Maybe we expect from him to run more than 14k in every game. I think he was one of the best players (against Arsenal). He showed energy and character. Yes, we are having to manage him, but not only him.

"We assess the players every day and we take the best decision for the team. We try to look after all the players. We have played a lot of games and we come from a difficult season because we played a lot.

"But I think that we have good staff, good sports science and medical who can look after the players in a good way."
