Tottenham announce Defoe moving to Toronto FC

Tottenham have announced Jermain Defoe is moving to Toronto FC.

The club released an official statement via Twitter on Friday morning:

"We have reached agreement with Toronto FC for the transfer of Jermain Defoe to the MLS side, with effect from February 28, 2014."

Tim Sherwood said the move was a positive step for the England striker:

"This is a great opportunity for Jermain and he feels it is one that he wishes to pursue."

But Jermain Defoe says he will remain focused on Spurs until he moves to the MLS at the end of February, the striker has been at the club since 2009, after an initial stint between 2004-2008:

"Everybody knows how much this club means to me. I will play my heart out for the team and the fans until my last kick for the club."

A pre-season friendly was agreed as part of the deal, and Defoe will probably line-up against his old side. Tottenham announced:

"[The] third game of US Pre Season Tour announced against Toronto FC - July 23, 2014."
