Swansea to lose Bony, Ki to Ivory Coast and South Korea duties

Swansea City will be without key duo Wilfried Bony and Ki Sung-yueng for much of January and possibly part of February.

Star striker Bony is off to the African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea with the Ivory Coast while midfielder Ki is set to captain South Korea at the Asian Cup in Australia.

Both players will be available to Swansea for the hectic Christmas period but will be off on their international duties after the January 1 clash with QPR according to manager Garry Monk.

"The QPR game will be the last for both of them," said Monk.

"I think some of the players (from Ivory Coast and South Korea) are meeting up at the end of December, but they will stay with us for QPR and we then plan for them to be away throughout the competitions.

"You would expect the teams they are representing to do well, so we are expecting the worst in terms of how long they might be away.

"I think it will be about a six-game period that they could be away, but it's not just us that have to deal with this, a lot of clubs are in the same position.

"It's a chance for others to come in and take their opportunity. We have good players waiting for a chance in those positions and this will give them an opportunity."

Bony's Elephants have been drawn in Group D of the African championship along with Mali, Cameroon and Guinea with their opening fixture against Guinea in Malabo on January 20. The tournament runs from January 17 to February 8.

Ki's Taeguk Warriors are in Group A of the Asian Cup alongside hosts Australia, Oman and Kuwait with their January 10 opener against the Omanis to be played in Canberra. The 2015 AFC tournament takes place between January 9 and 31.
