Southampton skipper Davis hopeful O'Neill remains with Northern Ireland

Southampton captain Steven Davis is keen on seeing Michael O'Neill continue on as manager of the Northern Ireland national team.

A 1-0 aggregate defeat against Switzerland in the qualification playoffs meant that Northern Ireland will not be participating in the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup and following the defeat, O'Neill's future as manager of the Green and White Army has been cast into doubt.

Davis said: "I speak for everyone by saying we'd love him to stay and how important he is for us. He has a bit of time and decisions to make.

"Other nations and clubs will probably take an interest in him because of the success we have had, but from a selfish point of view we really want to keep him."
