The Guardian says Elliott, 16, has joined the Reds from Fulham under freedom of contract.

However, the Anfield heavyweights are yet to make a compensation offer to the west London outfit.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp wasn't the only Premier League boss battling it out for his signature.

It's suggested Ralph Hasenhuttl was also vying for Elliott's services.

Last season, the exciting attacker became the youngest player ever to feature in a Premier League fixture.

The Austrian has been a revelation at St. Mary's since replacing Mark Hughes halfway through last season.

Speaking to The Sun, Hasenhuttl revealed Saints' plan to develop their young players rather than splurge on established stars.

He said: "We want to create big stars for the future.

"I think when you see the development of some players of my time, you see they reached a good level. I think they are now in the picture of a lot of clubs.

"We will never buy players for 30m or 40m. In the future that will not happen.

"We are looking for young players who give us a lot of fantasy in their development."

The boss and a group of players are headed for a preseason friendly in China against Guangzhou Evergrande.

The game is happening at the request of Saints owner Gao Jisheng.

The rest of the club's squad is still in Dublin, where they are engaging in a week-long training camp.

"It's a logistical challenge for sure," admitted Hasenhuttl to reporters.

"It was not easy to split the group and to take care of both sides one side is the owner and we want to go there and that's normal for sure, and the other side we try to have the best pre-season as possible so keep the guys hard working.

"We find a good compromise I think and I am enjoying it to go there short term and then I will be back on Wednesday in Dublin and I can see the other group.

"It is a little bit of challenge, yes, but I think we can make it."

Striker Ings is confident that he is right where he needs to be in terms and fitness and mental preparation.

I wanted to look after myself over the summer after the hamstring issues and niggles I had last season," he told the club's website following his two-goal performance in Saturday's 3-1 victory over Preston.

It was important that I came back this time with a good base and I've been working hard in pre-season on that and to impress the manager. As a team, we're getting stronger and positivity is high."

The Saints manager believes he has found enough players that complement and offer competition to each other.

The likes of Che Adams, Shane Long, Michael Obafemi, Nathan Redmond and Moussa Djenepo are all vying for a starting spot.

Hasenhuttl said to reporters: "I think we have very variable players in the moment. We have alternatives for every part of our game and I think that's important.

"We have had young players with us so far during pre-season which has given us new options and we have a battle in front for sure.

"It's a good challenge because I'm sure it's the position where we have the biggest battle at the moment but it will help us to get more quality in front of the goal."

The Saints have secured the signature of the 20-year-old, who played his first Premier League game for the club against Leicester City last term.

The academy graduate impressed boss Ralph Hasenhuttl enough to earn an extension. And Slattery admitted his delight at the completion of the move.

"It's a club I've been at since I was eight years old so it's always nice to put pen to paper and extend my stay," he said to the club's official website.

"It's somewhere that I would call home and the club means a lot to me. It's a club that I want to play at for a long time.

"Once you get a few dips in the first-team and begin learning off the players and manager, all you want is more.

"The manager has bought back the club's philosophy; young players getting a chance to make a statement and show that they're capable of playing at that level.

"Chances don't come around often so when they do you have to grab them with both hands and that's what I intend to do."

Adams joined Saints from Birmingham for 15m at the beginning of July and has already opened his account for the club on debut against Altach on Sunday.

Adkins worked with the striker at Sheffield United and believes he has the ability to excel in the Premier League.

He told the Daily Echo: "I think everybody has to grasp an opportunity that presents itself.

"Che has now got a great opportunity at a super club like Southampton as long as he knuckles down and works hard, who from what I can see have a very good manager.

"There are many young players who have left clubs at an early age and went and played non-league football.

"Che did that which is very good for his development instead of just playing youth football somewhere.

"Like everything you look for natural progression.

"He obviously had a good season last year with Birmingham, scored a lot of goals and caught the club's eye.

"As long as he keeps his mindset right and keeps striving to improve, then he has got a great opportunity from what I can see at a really good football club.

"It's going to be down to him."
