Real Sociedad striker Sadiq Umar defends leaving Nigeria's AFCON squad: Not my decision

Real Sociedad striker Sadiq Umar has defended himself after leaving Nigeria's AFCON squad.

Umar was released after Nigeria's medical team deemed him unfit with a knee injury. Though upon his return to San Sebastian, La Real's medical staff had a different opinion.

At a media conference, Umar addressed the issue.

Sadiq began with a statement defending himself.

"I don't understand all the accusations I have received in recent days in which they accused me of inventing an injury to return to my club. I want to make it clear that for me, representing my nation is a privilege and an honor."

The striker explained what happened with Nigeria.

"During the friendly against Guinea, I had a significant impact from two defenders. Although the medical services recommended that I leave the game and avoid problems, I insisted that I preferred to finish it. The next day, my knee swelled. The tests performed on me by the national team's medical team revealed an injury to my meniscus. Consequently, the coach decided to replace me based on medical advice, as my participation in the Africa Cup was considered uncertain."

Next, Sadiq discussed his return to San Sebastián and the different diagnosis from Real.

"After returning to my club, the medical team did tests on me and told me that I only had a bruise, so we decided to go back to training. I especially want to thank my club, La Real, for allowing me a quick recovery and return to training."

The Nigerian made himself available to the Super Easgles if, in the future, they decide to call him up again.

"Representing Nigeria is a priority for me, I will be happy to return if it is the case. I'm sad that I can't be with my teammates, but I'm happy because they're winning."
