Portsmouth are making a late move to trump Newcastle United's bid for Manchester United striker Alan Smith.
The Mail on Sunday says Pompey boss Harry Redknapp is lining up a £3.5 million bid for the United striker after being priced out of moves for Preston's David Nugent and Middlesbrough's Yakubu Aiyegbeni.
Redknapp said: "Alan is fantastic value at the money United are asking."
