Newcastle United U21s boss Elliott Dickman has heaped praise on Isaac Westendorf.
The young forward arrived from Isthmian League North Division side Barking on an initial trial in January.
The 21-year-old then earned a permanent deal, but suffered a thigh injury this pre-season to derail his progress.
The Newcastle U21s boss told ChronicleLive: "It was a long-term injury, the medical staff have worked really well with him to get him to where he is. He's been in training for a little while with us, just not quite ready to start a game.
"He came on midweek in the Papa John's [Cup] and made a real impact for 30 minutes, and from that point of view the plan was to see if we can get Isaac a bit more time here today. We've managed to do that, and he's done well.
"There's areas he needs to get better, we're really pleased with his goal. It was a real good touch forward and finish, so we're delighted for him. He's been fully committed to the programme, he's got a fantastic attitude and he deserves that opportunity."
