Alonso expected Newcastle's resistance and felt the home side's patience finally paid off in the second half.

"They played in a very compact style so it's not easy to find space to attack and create chances," he told chelseafc.com. "In the second half, we did very well and were intense in our play. That makes it hard for them to hold for 90 minutes so we were able to get the goal and the three points.

"We were prepared for them to play like that. Maybe in the first half, we were lacking a bit of patience and finesse in the final third but we always had belief that the goal would come.

"We have many options in the team and this is good. The team is getting better, we are improving game by game and we need to continue in this way. We are moving the ball quickly, our press is good and we are doing a good job as a team. We have clear ideas and we have to continue in this way."

Alonso felt the three Premier League points were particularly important coming in the first game back from an international break and he emphasised that hard work was paying off with results as we secured a fifth consecutive win in all competitions.

"It was very important to win after the international break," he admitted. "We played with a lot of patience and at the end we got the goal, we kept grafting and got a good reward

"It's a new season with new staff and there's room for improvement but since the beginning we have improved a lot. We need to keep focused on each game and work hard in training."

Chelsea beat Shearer's former side Newcastle 1-0 on Saturday thanks to Marcos Alonso's late goal.

But it was Hudson-Odoi who provided the assist, his third of the season, as Chelsea continued their winning ways under manager Frank Lampard.

"He has played three times this season and he has three assists," Shearer said on BBC's Match of the Day.

He had such a terrible injury which he's come back from. He's 18 years of age and can spray the ball around like that, left or right, and he is full of confidence.

"He can go on the outside and come on the inside.

"Everything Chelsea did well he was at the heart of it.

He did his bit defensively which he had to do and he was hugging the touchline, and with that drive that he's got he makes it very difficult for defenders.

"For the goal he sets it up for Alonso, puts it into his path and says 'go on, have a go' and that was the winning goal. Chelsea were the better team and deserved to score."

The Spaniard struck in the 73rd minute to secure a fifth consecutive win for Frank Lampard's Blues, although the victory owed much to persistence and patience from those within the ranks.

"Newcastle played very compact and it's not easy to find spaces to attack or create chances but I think we played well in the second half. We were so intense and finally got the goal and the three points," said the defender.

"We believed because we knew the game would be like this - we were prepared for this and in the first half maybe we were lacking a bit of patience in the final third but in the end we were happy with the three points and the goals. It was a massive win after the international break."

He also told the club's website: "We have many options in the team and this is good. The team is getting better, we are improving game by game and we need to continue in this way. We are moving the ball quickly, our press is good and we are doing a good job as a team. We have clear ideas and we have to continue in this way."

A Marcos Alonso goal overcame a difficult opposition side and made it five wins in a row for the Blues.

"Credit to Newcastle," said Lampard when he spoke after the game. "You can see why they have had a couple of big results this year. They are organised, they have men behind the ball, they are a threat on the counter-attack, and in the first half, albeit we created a couple of chances, we were a bit safe, a bit slow. We did move the ball from side to side but not with enough risk to sometimes take people out of the game and that was the message at half-time.

"In the second half, for the majority of it we did that. Our combinations were good, we played between the lines more, people were going one-v-one Callum Hudson-Odoi, Willian and Christian Pulisic when he came on - and it should have been more goals to make the last 10 minutes more comfortable."

A Marcos Alonso goal overcame a difficult opposition side and made it five wins in a row for the Blues.

Lampard said: "The second half was the most pleasing thing. It was a good test for us today. We changed things a little in the second half and we showed a little more flexibility and creativity.

"We were upbeat, we had urgency, the tempo was good, and that got us the win.

"We want to score goals. You can see the fans - I think they're happy with what they're seeing at the moment. We want more.

"If we want to keep moving up, we can do better. So far this season, though, things are going well."

On Ross Barkley's injury, he added: "It's an ankle injury. We need to assess it and see how bad it is."

A single goal from Marcos Alonso settled it at Stamford Bridge after a tight affair in the capital.

Bruce said: I thought in the first half, we showed enough quality.

Second half, we struggled and tired a bit.

The way they went about their job, and their effort and commitment, I couldn't have faulted.

I thought we looked as threat on the break, and if we can be a bit more careful with the final pass, then of course the big thing is we have to find some goals.

But certainly in the first half in particular, we looked a threat."

A single goal from Marcos Alonso settled it at Stamford Bridge after a tight affair in the capital.

Bruce said: "We had a few chances in the first half in particular, but we didn't pick the right pass or the right cross.

"Chelsea have a nice blend of youth and experience at the moment. We didn't weather the storm in the second half.

"We've had a really tough start. We've now got a run of games against teams who are going to be in and around us. Hopefully we can get a few points."

On Chelsea's goal: "I have to say, I thought it was a foul on Joelinton. When you come to Chelsea you need these things to fall for you. I thought it was a clear and obvious foul on Joe."

Pulisic replaced Mason Mount just after the hour mark, with the hosts struggling to find a way past a determined Toon defence, and played a key part in setting up Marcos Alonso's 73rd minute winner.

"I'm really pleased for him," Lampard said. He's a hot topic because of the price tag. Because of his status in his national team, and his world status through that. And everyone has got a little bit carried away with the short term.

The long term is that he's come here and he's just turned 21 and to see him play like he did today, and there's a lot more to come.

It's not the end story. You can see his balance and awareness and you can see how he can play.

And there's improvement to come as with all the young players, but delighted for him because he will feel good about that. And he should do because he was a big part of us winning that game."

Last week, two or three joined in training that I hadn't really seen before.

We'll start planning in the next couple of weeks, but January is always a difficult window.

Well see what's out there."

The gifted Frenchman made just his second start of the season in the 1-0 win against Manchester United last time out after putting his hamstring issues behind him.

It's given us a different option. The first minute, Allan picks it up, beats two or three and puts Almiron in," Bruce told reporters ahead of the trip to Chelsea.

It has given us something extra, a different dimension, and the introduction of DeAndre, too, who I hadn't seen play before. I'd seen him play before, but obviously not witnessed him first-hand.

That has given us that little bit of something you require in the Premier League, that little injection of pace, which was great."
