Toon manager Bruce has decided to leave out the 21-year-old following the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, according to The Times.

He will be replaced in the starting XI at Carrow Road by South Korean Ki Sung-yueng, who reportedly voiced his displeasure at being dropped against the Gunners.

Longstaff was arguably the biggest success story of Newcastle's season in the 2018/19 campaign.

His performances caught the eye of Manchester United's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

His side travel to Norwich on Saturday before a trip to Spurs next weekend, and already the pressure is on after an opening day defeat to Arsenal.

"I do not think I will be entitled to that patience (Rafa Benitez had)," he said. "But the 10 games which he was afforded, there was not a murmur in the ground. I do not think I will have that luxury.

"So a win and a good performance would settle everything down. A win without a performance would do."

He spent two months at Blackpool last season but only made the one appearance in his time at Bloomfield Road.

There was confusion following the introduction of the Newcastle debutant in the 54th minute as he charged around midfield before being instructed, by Bruce, to change position within 60 seconds.

And Willems was then caught on his heels at the onset of the move which led to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's 58th-minute strike.

"I put Jetro on in midfield, where he played all last season for Frankfurt, and then I very quickly thought, 'Do you know something? That's a bit unfair on him'," said Bruce.

"Maybe I should have done it beforehand. It's a bit unfair on him because he's making his debut and (I thought), "I will put him on in his favoured position", so I switched him very, very quickly.

"It's unfortunate, but that's the way it was."

Bruce has stuck with the use of wing-backs as Rafa Benitez did but has switched to two up-front.

"I don't think that a team's style should have to adapt to an individual player," Manquillo told the Evening Chronicle.

"I think it's we the players who have to fit into a system or formation.

"From the outset, he came here with this formation we have taken it on board perfectly and have been settling into it.

"I think that up to now it's been going well for us."

So what about fatherhood has it an impact on him?

"It changes everything for you because you now have a new responsibility in this world, and yes, it really was a wonderful experience.

"[He was born in Newcastle ] Yes! I'm happy in this city and circumstances dictated that he was born here.

"We could have had him in Spain but as I am so happy and at home here, this is where he was born, and so yes, I've now got a little Geordie."

The right-back understands that he will have to battle to remain the regular starter given the arrival of Emil Krafh from Amiens.

But Manquillo, who also became a father over the summer, is happy to compete with his teammates in the coming months.

"Whenever you have someone who makes you compete for the shirt," Manquillo told NUFC TV.

"It's much better for the team because that means that you always need to be alert.

"Competition is always going to improve the squad so that can only be a good thing.

"What every footballer always wants is to be playing regularly and so I always work as hard as I can to be ready and available for the team and to always be able to help them out."
