Central Coast Mariners have provided an update on Mike Phelan's status with the club.

Phelan is under contract with the Australian A-League side as their sporting director.

The Australian side have all but confirmed that whether he returns to the role will depend on how things pan out for him at Manchester United.

Phelan is reportedly in line to become technical director at United, while he may also stay on as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's assistant on a permanent basis.

A Mariners spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News: "We are eager to have Mike continue on with the club but at the moment we are at the mercy of waiting to see what the future holds for Mike and United.

"We are still in constant dialogue with Mike, who has been fantastic, keeping us updated every step of the way.

“He's fond of the Mariners, we're fond of Mike, so hopefully he can continue his role with the academy."
