Leicester star Mahrez lands top Facebook gong

Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez has won the Player of the Year award at the 2016 Facebook Football Awards.

Nearly one million fans from 193 countries around the world picked the Algerian international for the only end-of-season football prize to be chosen purely by fans.

Mahrez scored 17 goals and provided 11 assists in 36 league appearances for the Foxes in their title-winning campaign.

"It's something special, and something big as well, because it's from all over the world, and I thank them, and thanks to all of my fans," said the 25-year-old who also won the PFA Player of the Year award.

"I love all my fans. I am very happy."

Mahrez beat teammates Jamie Vardy and N'Golo Kante, Tottenham striker Harry Kane, Arsenal star Jesut Ozil and West Ham United ace Dimtri Payet to the award.
