Leicester boss Rodgers cancels players' day off: I've never done that before

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers canceled a planned day off for his players for the first time in his career.

Rodgers has never been one for showcasing excessive discipline in a way to get his players in line.

However, he was extremely displeased with how his team performed against Newcastle United, when they lost 3-0 at home on Boxing Day.

“We were due to have a day off but we came in and assessed it," Rodgers said at his press conference on Wednesday.

“It was the first time I've ever done it on a planned day off.

“It was just the why. Why after the games that we had, and the rest that we had, and the work that we had, why did we start in that manner?

“It's all about learning. That's the challenge of being a coach, it's trying to learn, especially after a performance like that. We were able to talk it through and open up. Conversations like that allow you to move on.

“They (the players) understood. They would have been like me and had families travel over and probably waiting at home for them on their day off. But my responsibility is to make sure the team is at their required level mentally.

“I just felt it wasn't the performance that we would want and had built up for. I didn't want to waste another day in trying to make it right, so rather than wait until today (Wednesday), I said let's deal with it the next morning. Let's put it right. We've not wasted a day, then, in getting ready for Friday."
