Southampton boss Ronald Koeman is a doubt to be on the bench for the league opener against Newcastle United this weekend.

The Dutch tactician ruptured his Achilles in training on the eve of the Europa League qualifier against Vitesse Arnhem on Wednesday.

Assistant manager Erwin Koeman confirmed the news in the post-match interview following the 2-0 second leg qualifying win in Holland.

"He [Koeman] knows he has already some problems with his Achilles and if you are involved in a training sessions then s*** can happen like what happened," Erwin said.

"Okay, we will hear tomorrow what happened and we will hear tomorrow if he is on Sunday on the bench or not.

"Tomorrow morning he goes to hospital and then they will decide what to do."
