Hodgson suggests Tottenham's Kane wants summer England U21 appearance

England boss Roy Hodgson has revealed that Harry Kane is eager to play for the U21s this summer.

There has been plenty of hearsay and conjecture regarding the presence of the Tottenham star at the UEFA U21 European Championships in the Czech Republic after he made his senior debut last week.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is eager to take Kane with him to Australia for a pre-season tour while U21 manager Gareth Southgate was unsure if the 19-goal Premier League forward would make himself available for selection but Hodgson has indicated that he will play for the Young Lions.

"Harry wants to go with the U21s. He wants to finish the job that he has done. He has been a major part of their qualifying campaign for the last 18 months," said Hodgson.

"He's had to work his way into the team and in my conversations with him it has been pretty obvious to me he would like to play in this tournament.

"Harry can play an important part and maybe help them go far in the tournament. That certainly won't hurt his chances in the first team and I am happy to back him.

"If Gareth wants to pick Kane, that is fine by me. He is going to be important for Gareth."
