Hodgson backs Everton in Barkley U21 Euros stand

England coach Roy Hodgson supports Everton boss Roberto Martinez's insistence that Ross Barkley not be considered for the U21 Euros.

Hodgson wants to keep the Everton prodigy for the senior squad, even though he is eligible for Gareth Southgate's Under-21 side.

He said: "I think Roberto has a genuine argument about Ross and the Under-21s and it brings you back to what benefits the tournament will have.

"I tend to be veering towards Roberto for the simple reason that I think that was a tough tournament in Brazil last year for Barkley.

"He is a part of our national team and in his last couple of games has proved himself a worthy one.

"I think another major argument against him going, one that Gareth is aware of, is they have worked hard to qualify with a good group of players.

"So to suddenly catapult in someone like Ross it might not be the right thing to do for squad harmony. I'm not certain you can guarantee not to upset the rest of the players."
