Genoa coach Gilardino delighted with victory over Lecce: I'm happy for Ekuban

Genoa coach Alberto Gilardino was delighted with the determination of his players for their win against Lecce.

Genoa won 2-1, with Mateo Retegui and Caleb Ekuban scoring the goals.

Gilardino said: “How important is this victory? I wanted it and we wanted it, all together. In the first half it didn't go as we would have liked and it's certainly thanks to Lecce, we weren't very clear with the ball and we were late on the second balls.

"In the second half we changed something tactically and those who came on made the difference and it's thanks to them. With great attitude and spirit we managed to overturn it and win it. The spirit that this team shows in difficulties is incredible, we have a strong awareness of being able to turn the match around at any moment.

"What chords did we touch at halftime? Lecce started really strong in the first half and credit should be given to them. In the second half, with the chat we had at the end of the first half, something changed, in the interpretation and in the duels. Ekuban entered very well as did Sabelli. In the second half we turned the game around with quality and great competitive desire to achieve an important result.

"Ekuban and Retegui? Mateo worked so hard for the team, he sacrificed himself. There is room for improvement but I'm happy with his game. As for Caleb, he entered the match in a ferocious manner and scored a goal like a true striker. I'm happy for him because he is a player that we have and that we want. He has important qualities that he must exploit whether he starts from the beginning or if he comes from the bench.

"The will on his part is always to demonstrate and be ready. This is important for a coach. At the end of the match he told me that he almost scored a goal like mine and I told him that he still has to get there (laughs, ed.). I'm happy, he deserves it and I'm happy for the team. We knew it was a tough game, but we did well to turn it around."
