Ex-Ajax coach Bogarde: Much more to come from Newcastle defender Botman

Former Ajax coach Winston Bogarde is convinced there's more to come from Sven Botman.

Bogarde worked with the Newcastle United defender at Ajax.

He told De Telegraaf: "The focus on wanting to be the best.

"Getting better every day, raising the bar, challenging yourself and getting the killer mentality to eat up an opponent and take them out to avoid conceding goals. That's the number one priority as a defender.

"After Sven turned the switch, our collaboration and bond got much better.

"He was very eager to learn, listened well and set to work to improve every day. His work ethic was good, a world away from when I started with him. He thought too easy and didn't go all out. His attitude and behavior was just bad. But when I look at him like that, I see the focus, drive and winning mentality to survive and win. I hope he can keep that throughout his career.

"But when he continued his career at Lille, he had the basis to show himself abroad. He proved that in France and is now doing it again in the Premier League, where he is more at home.

"So I'm very happy for him because he's come a long way. At the end of the day the players have to do it themselves. I've only helped in his development and hopefully taught him the details of defending. Now he's in the top with Newcastle United five. He is a mainstay and concedes few goals. Then you deserve a serious chance with the Dutch national team. And he will get it."
