Everton have reportedly made a £9million bid for Southampton's Jose Fonte.

According to the Daily Record, Toffees boss Ronald Koeman has attempted to steal a march on other interested clubs by tabling an offer for the Saints captain.

It is understood that Manchester United have made the Portuguese centre-half a serious target as Jose Mourinho's looks to revitalise the defence he inherited from Louis van Gaal but Everton are eager to get in first.

Fonte, who won Euro2016 with Portugal, was a key player for Koeman at St Mary's and the Dutchman is keen to reunite at Goodison Park if the Toffees lose John Stones to Manchester City, as is expected.
