Benitez not concerned by lack of Newcastle goal machine

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has revealed that he is not concerned about his sides lack of a prolific forward this season.

After winning promotion to the top-flight last season, the Magpies have had a decent season, however one area of concern to fans is the clubs attack where they have lacked a lethal finisher.

Ayoze Perez and Dwight Gayle have both scored five goals each and this season could be the first time that the clubs top scorer would have scored a total below ten since Michael Owen netted eight times during the 2008/09 season.

Benitez said: "It depends on how things go.

"We create chances and we have had the stats back, I think we're seventh in the league in terms of chances created to be fair.

"That's with attempts and shots on target so it is a little bit of luck sometimes.

"We can work on their accuracy and we'll score more goals.

"Yeah but at the same time we are scoring more than a lot of teams at the bottom of the table.

"We have a good balance as we don't concede too many. That's also thanks to the hard work of the strikers.

"Dwight Gayle, Joselu, and Ayoze Perez have worked hard defending.

"You can't expect them always to be fresh to make the difference in attack. You could say if they don't defend they'd score more goals.

"But our players aren't the type that will beat three players and score a goal on their own and if we want to be successful as a team we need the goalkeeper starting the attacks and the strikers also defending from the front and that's how we'll be more successful as a team."
