Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has dismissed criticism of Emi Martinez after defeat to West Ham.

Argentine shot-stopper Martinez,28, struggled in a 3-1 Premier League home loss to the Hammers.

Yet Smith refused to criticise his £17million summer signing from Arsenal after 10 clean sheets this season in the top-flight already.

“Very disappointing goals," assessed Smith.

“I can't moan too much about our goalkeeper the way he has done this season.

“He has 10 clean sheets already.

“He is having an excellent season so far and one mistake certainly won't disappoint the Villa fans and myself with how he has done this season."
