Sunderland are rank outsiders going into the Capital One Cup final against Manchester City.
Monty earned immortality on Wearside with his miraculous double save against Leeds United when Sunderland won the FA Cup at Wembley almost 41 years ago under former manager Bob Stokoe.
He told the Daily Star Sunday: "We need somebody to step up to the plate now in the final. I would love to see the club do it.
"They're in the same situation we were in with Leeds.
"Under Don Revie they were the best team in the land and, for me, Manchester City are probably the best in the Premier League now."
