Rooney yearns for Man Utd captaincy but van Persie would be good fit

Wayne Rooney admits he would love to be named captain of Manchester United.

The 28-year old forward is one of a couple of candidates to take over from Nemanja Vidic who has departed the club for Inter Milan and says it would be a great honour to lead the famous club.

"I am interested in the captaincy," Rooney said. "I've captained United a few times and to get it on a full-time basis would be great."

Dutch striker Robin van Persie, who skippers new United manager Louis van Gaal's Holland team, is also in the running which England international Rooney was quick to acknowledge.

"I feel I am ready for (the captaincy), but it's the manager's decision," Rooney added.

"If he chooses someone else, then honestly I've got no problems with that. I will respect his decision. Robin is captain of his country, he has captained Arsenal and if Robin gets the nod to be captain, then I'm sure he'll do a great job."
