Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal gave the green light to their sensational swoop for Radamel Falcao over injury concerns for Robin van Persie. The Mirror says Van Persie is facing surgery on a troublesome injury to his left knee which would rule him out for months.
That is the real reason behind Manchester United's move for Colombian superstar Falcao who is set to move to Old Trafford in a £16m one-year loan deal.
The package for Falcao includes a £6million loan fee for AS Monaco and his £200,000-a-week wages which will represent small change if they get back into the top four.
It did look as if United would be overloaded with attacking talent with Wayne Rooney, van Persie, Juan Mata and Angel Di Maria.
But the fitness blow to van Persie reveals why United went all out to get Falcao.
