Nice jump ahead of Newcastle for Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina

Nice have made a bid for Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina.

Lemina is available from Southampton after last season's loan with Fulham. The midfielder impressed for the Cottagers, though couldn't prevent their relegation from the Premier League.

Lemina remains available from St Mary's and a move to Newcastle United appeared likely - that is before owner Mike Ashley pulled back over Saints' asking price for a player of 27 years.

Instead, Nice are now in contact with Saints and have made an opening offer. A bid of €4m has been tabled, with Nice waiting on Southampton's response, reports Le 10 Sport.

Lemina has been on the books at Southampton since 2017, moving to St Mary's from Juventus. The 27 year-old has since spent time away on-loan with Galatasaray and Fulham.

Last season at Craven Cottage, Lemina played 30 games, scoring once and producing one assist. He has a contract to 2022 and is a Gabon international.
