Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has slammed the club's attitude towards the FA Cup.
Newcastle were bundled out of the competition by Leicester City on the weekend.
Shearer told the Evening Chronicle: "It's been like that for a number of years, hasn't it. Newcastle United's record in the competition over recent years has been disastrous because the simple fact of the matter is that the don't really want to be in it.
"The Premier League status is for them the main priority. The club have come out and said that and that's unbelievably disappointing, especially for the 4000 fans who went to Leicester expecting to see a strong team and expecting their team to win.
"I am not telling you anything that no-one knows. This is what the club have said, and they stated this a couple of years ago, that the league is their priority.
"They want to finish in the top ten and want to stay in the League, and what they have done constantly in the FA Cup is constantly leave their best players out, which tells its own story.
"That is what Newcastle as a club are at this moment in time. I can't tell you anything different. That's the facts. That is what has been out in front of us and has been for a number of years now."
