Newcastle United will not be attempting to bring Liverpool striker Andy Carroll back to St James' Park.

The Evening Chronicle says sources at United have dismissed talk of any possible move for Carroll during the January window despite the player struggling to hit the heights he enjoyed at Newcastle since his move to Liverpool last January.

United have already made it clear they are not in the market for a striker and will focus on defensive talks.
