Salford City are out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle.
Salford were watched on by part-owners former Manchester United stars Paul Scholes and Phil Neville as their FA Cup dream was ended by League One Shewsbury.
Adam Rooney - reputed to be the National League's best-paid player on £4,000-a-week - was Salford's goalscorer in the 3-1 defeat.
Salford boss Graham Alexander said: "There is frustration because we didn't play anywhere as well as we have done and can do.
"You can't play well every week and that's what we've told the players. We are not in showbusiness, we are in a game we want to win. That's the reality and we are disappointed we are not in the next round."
