Manchester United are set to lay a plastic pitch at Old Trafford!

The Daily Mail says United will play on a part-synthetic surface next season after committing £800,000 to revive the Old Trafford pitch.

Ground staff are preparing to rip up the existing turf, which 'collapsed' under the weight of heavy rain last December, and replace it with a Desso surface similar to that used at Wembley.

Sir Alex Ferguson was alarmed by the deteriorating surface, which has not been changed since the start of the 2003-2004 season, and ground staff were working overtime to keep it up to standard during the last five months of the season.

United have been impressed by the smoothness of the pitch at Wembley, which was laid by specialist company Desso and contains 20 million artificial fibres intertwined with the natural grass 20cm beneath the surface.

This technology creates a sturdier playing surface in comparison to an all-grass pitch like that currently at Old Trafford.
