Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson is long term admirer of the Italian international and it is now believed the Old Trafford outfit are lining up an 18 million bid for Buffon.
With current keeper Edwin Van der Sar almost 40, the United hierarchy see Buffon as the ideal replacement.
