Former Rangers striker Peter Lovenkrands has joined Newcastle until the end of the season. The 28-year-old Denmark international said: "It's going to be tough this season because it's so tight at the bottom, but we have got a lot of quality and hopefully I can add to that.

"I've got a great opportunity to impress and hopefully win a contract beyond then.

"I know all about Newcastle United. This club is so big and amazing and for me and my family, this is definitely the right move."

Toon boss Joe Kinnear said: "We are delighted to get a player with such experience on board.

"He's definitely a threat going forward and we are hoping he can help us to get some of the points which will see us move up the table."
