Hodgson satisfied as England overcome stubborn Slovenia

England coach Roy Hodgson was satisfied with their 3-1 win over Euro qualifying opponents Slovenia.

A Jordan Henderson own-goal had the visitors in front but Wayne Rooney won and converted a penalty before a Danny Welbeck double ensured England maintained their 100 per cent record in Group E.

Despite a lacklustre performance, Hodgson was happy to come away with a win and believes England are now firmly in the driving seat in their group.

"Our goal before this game was to go into the new year with 12 points, unbeaten," he said.

"The only disappointment I suppose is that we now can no longer boast about having a clean sheet but I suppose we still can boast that no opponent has scored against us because we put the ball in our own goal for them."

He added: "We went a goal down, I think it was very, very important to break straight back and luckily we did that with the penalty and after that I thought our play was certainly better.

"I thought we created a lot more chances and in the end it turned out to be a very good victory because we've seen today that Slovenia have been good value for their six points and their two victories so far.

"But now in the group we've beaten Switzerland away, we've beaten Slovenia at home which puts us in a good position."
