Hoddle: Premier League managers need to respect English talent

Former Tottenham and Chelsea boss Glenn Hoddle says Premier League managers need to be convinced about English talent.

Hoddle wrote in the London Evening Standard: "The players are back home after our worst ever performance at the World Cup and the answer to the problem is clear. We must give more English players opportunities, bring more young players through and change the way we coach our kids.

"It would be perfect if we could change the law and say, "right, we will only have five foreign players in any one team and everyone else has to be English". That would benefit the international team instantly but the European Union will not wear it.

"So, there needs to be a change of philosophy. We have to persuade foreign managers and foreign owners who have such a big stake in our game to trust in English players. We need them to bring on more and better young English players instead of simply buying from abroad.

"For years the objective of people running the clubs has been to win trophies, not the England team. We all have to stop and think about the damage being done to English football.

"Only 32 per cent of players in the Premier League are English - and that is only going to get worse. We have to be honest - we are not blessed with a lot of talent in our country. We have some great young players coming through but nowhere near enough."
