GONE! Mazzarri steps down as Watford manager

Walter Mazzarri has stepped down as manager of Watford after just 11 months in the role.

The Italian will take charge of his final match this Sunday against Manchester City at Vicarage Road.

The announcement was made by Watford chairman Scott Duxbury on Wednesday night.

He said: "After the board discussed with Walter Mazzarri the club's future goals and aspirations, it was decided he will be stepping down from his position as the club's head coach after the final game of the 2016/17 season.

"We thank Walter and his staff for the contribution they have made to Watford Football Club over the past year."

Mazzarri became the third Watford manager ever, alongside Graham Taylor and predecessor Quique Sanchez Flores, to keep the club in the Premier League when the Hornets secured their safety in April.

However, Watford's late season form left much to be desired, having lost 9 out of their last 13 and their last five in a row.

Sky Sports reports that there are other circumstances that may have lead to Mazzarri's departure.

The 55-year old has struggled to grasp the English language in the year he has been in London, which has made it difficult for him to connect with players, fans and the press.

Mazzarri also had a translator with him on the training pitch at times, which had caused agitation amongst the players. Mazzarri's insistence on prioritising hard training sessions over recovery also reportedly caught the ire of his squad.

Hull City manager Marco Silva is being strongly tipped to replace Mazzarri.
