FA CUP - 5th ROUND: Man Utd ease past Shrewsbury

Manchester United are comfortably through to the FA Cup quarter-finals courtesy of a 3-0 win over Shrewsbury Town on Monday night.

Louis van Gaal's outfit dominated proceedings at the New Meadow with 75% of possession while creating a number of chances throughout to move into the next round where they will face West Ham United at Old Trafford on the weekend of March 12.

United had all of the play in the first half and finally managed to break down the resistance of Micky Mellon's side in the 37th minute when Chris Smalling managed to get a shot off under extreme duress from the Shrews defence, with the deflected effort almost freakishly rifling beyond Jayson Leutwiler.

And soon enough the Red Devils had doubled their advantage when Juan Mata delivered a delightful free-kick from the edge of the area which had Leutwiler rooted to the spot. However, the goal caused some controversy as there were a trio of United players offside when he took the set-piece, with the ambition of impeding the sight of the Salop keeper.

Nevertheless the goal stood and van Gaal's men when into the break full of confidence.

A third goal came just after the hour-mark when Ander Herrera played a neat ball over the top which allowed Jesse Lingard to side-foot a half-volley between the legs of Leutwiler with what was a quality finish.

United almost had a fourth when substitute Will Kane fired into the upright before immediately going down with a groin injury which reduced the visitors to ten men for the final 15 minutes.

In the end it was a convincing performance from under-fire van Gaal's United who will now look to Thursday night's Europa League Round of 32 second leg at home against FC Midtjylland after last week's shock 2-1 loss as Shropshire's Salop, who sit 21st in League One, head to bottom-placed Colchester United on Saturday.
