Last-minute penalty saves Jets blushes

Last year's Johnny Warren Medalist Joel Griffiths slotted a last-minute penalty to give both teams a share of the points in front of 16,000 fans after an 87th minute header from Olyroo substitute Matt Simon.

New Jets signing Edmundo Zura had the home crowd excited at stages, especially when he got on the end of a Jin-Hyung Song cross that went close to being the opening goal whilst at the other end, 16-year old Ben Kantarovski impressed with a solid defensive performance on Mariners star Sasho Petrovski.

Newcastle seemed to control most of the contest but it was the true grit and determination of the visitors that stemmed the tide and then managed to have a grasp on all three points against the run of play.

However it was not to be as referee Matthew Breeze pointed to the spot in injury time to give the Jets a share of the spoils.
