Guus Hiddink's first game in charge saw Chelsea win 1-0 at Aston Villa and move into third place. An impressive performance was decided by Nicolas Anelka's first half strike.
Villa's Ashley Young hit the woodwork with a free kick and Blues keeper Petr Cech had to make a couple of smart saves but overall Chelsea were good value for the three points.
For Villa boss Martin O'Neill the result ended a dismal week; knocked out of the FA Cup and a home draw in the first leg of their Uefa Cup tie.
New boss Hiddink told Sky Sports 1, "It's a very good start in new circumstances and a new situation.
"What pleased me most was the first half, we played very good football, had good possession and were dangerous.
"The only thing we didn't do was score a second to kill the game.
"In the second half we leaned back a bit too much because they have power in the air but on the other hand we could have scored one or two more."
