Carroll determined to establish himself at Newcastle

Andy Carroll is determined to fight for his future at Newcastle United.

The big centre-forward is back on Tyneside after an ill-fated loan at Preston and was a late sub in the draw against Stoke City on Sunday.

The England under-19 ace - who started well at Deepdale but lost his place when ex-Academy coach Alan Irvine took charge - told the Evening Chronicle: "As soon as I lost my place at Preston I was devastated.

"It was hard for me and not knowing anybody down there made it even harder.

"Going home alone and then just training and not playing was hard for me. All I could do was train and try to keep my fitness up.

"I tried to push myself into the Preston team after I lost my place, but it did not happen - so that is why I am back at Newcastle.

"I do not want to go out on loan - I want to stay at Newcastle. I am delighted to be back here.

"I just want to work my way back towards the first team, but first I have to perform in the reserves."
