Calderon named new Real Betis coach

Gabriel Calderon has been appointed new coach of Real Betis.

The 53-year-old has been put in charge of the relegation-threatened side after Sunday night's sacking of Juan Carlos Garrido.

Calderon took his first training session on Monday morning, while telling Betis' club website: "I am here with hope that we can get out of this situation."

The situation he speaks of is Betis being rooted to the foot of the Primera Division, with Garrido being relieved of his duties in the wake of a 5-0 loss to Real Madrid on Saturday.

He had only replaced Pepe Mel - now at West Brom - on December 2, but failed to win any of his league games in charge.
