Big 7 stories from Spain's Segunda Division: Tenerife flying; fans flock to Real Zaragoza; Sanchez a star for Burgos

Another exciting and tight LALIGA HYPERMOTION season is unfolding, with the top six teams sitting within just two points of each other as we head into Matchday 11. CD Tenerife are top of the table with 21 points, followed by RCD Espanyol on 20 points, then Real Zaragoza, CD Leganés, Levante UD and Real Valladolid on 19 points, SD Eibar on 18 points and Real Sporting on 17 points.

Four of these teams are set to face each other this weekend, as RCD Espanyol host Real Valladolid and Real Zaragoza play away at Real Sporting. So, the table will be shaken up even more.

Here's a look at everything you need to know about how the 2023/24 LALIGA HYPERMOTION campaign has unfolded thus far over the first 10 matchdays.

Star performances have pushed CD Tenerife to top spot

In a league consisting of several strong teams competing for promotion, CD Tenerife have stolen the spotlight in this first stretch of the campaign. Goalkeeper Juan Soriano has recorded the most clean sheets in the league (six in 10 games), while no player has scored more match-winners than striker Enric Gallego (four). Meanwhile, summer signing Roberto López, who has joined on loan from Real Sociedad, has hit the ground running with four goals and one assist in 10 duels.

RCD Espanyol's attacking prowess

Sitting second in the table just a few months after being relegated from LALIGA EA SPORTS, RCD Espanyol's objective is to return to the top flight next season. Despite the summer departures of key players such as Sergi Darder and Joselu, LosPeriquitos got off to a solid start to the campaign. They have netted more goals than any other team in the league, averaging exactly two per game. That makes sense given that they boast arguably the finest attacking trident in the division, as Pere Milla, Martin Braithwaite and Javi Puado have scored a combined 13 goals. In fact, only three LALIGA HYPERMOTION teams have netted more goals than this RCD Espanyol trio.

Real Valladolid and SD Eibar have bounced back

Real Valladolid are one of the three teams that got relegated to Spanish football's second tier last season along with LosPeriquitos. Aiming to clinch one of the two spots that would secure them automatic promotion to LALIGA EA SPORTS, the Pucela started the season on the back foot, grabbing just one win and losing three of their first five games. Yet, they've managed to bounce back with five straight wins and four clean sheets. That makes them the joint-most in-form team in the division, along with SD Eibar, who also had a tough start and were bottom after five matchdays, before recovering with a remarkable run of form.

Newly promoted Racing Club de Ferrol still have momentum

Having secured promotion to LALIGA HYPERMOTION back in May for the first time in 15 years, Racing Club de Ferrol have demonstrated that they have what it takes to keep punching above their weight. Ten matchdays into the season, Racing Club de Ferrol sit ninth in the table, just three points from the playoff spots. They remain undefeated at A Malata, having secured three wins and two draws on home soil. In fact, their last home defeat dates back in December 2022, in a game against AD Alcorcón. It remains to be seen whether Racing Club de Ferrol can pull off a miracle by securing back-to-back promotions, but anything is possible in Spain's second division.

El Molinón is a fortress

Boasting the sixth youngest squad in the league, with an average age of 25.8 years, Real Sporting are pushing for a return to the top-flight for the first time since 2016/17. Los Rojiblancos have won all four of their games on home soil so far, making them the only club with a 100 percent record at home, with El Molinón turning into fortress for yet another season. The player who has stolen the limelight is Gaspar Campos, who has bagged five goals in nine games thus far. It has to be noted that no LALIGA HYPERMOTION player has scored more goals from open play than the 23-year-old winger.

The mission at La Romareda

A decade away from LALIGA EA SPORTS is a long period for one of the best-supported teams in Spain. Real Zaragoza haven't played top-flight football since 2012/13, but their strong start to the season demonstrates their motivation to make a comeback. Los Blanquillos, who boast the second-best defence in the league with just six goals conceded thus far,won their first five games of the 2023/24 term. They may have experienced a drop in form since mid-September, but optimism remains high in Spain's fifth-largest city. Having recorded the best attendance figures in the league, with an impressive average of 23,464 in six matches, the fans at La Romareda will do whatever it takes to push the team towards promotion.

The top scorer is an attacking midfielder at a mid-table club

No LALIGA HYPERMOTION player has etched his name onto the scoresheet more times than Burgos CF attacking midfielder Curro Sánchez. Featuring both on the right flank and behind the striker in a playmaking position, Curro is the league's top scorer with eight goals, including five converted penalties. Three of these goals have been particularly crucial for Burgos CF - who currently sit 13th in the table – as they helped his team seal three of their four wins thus far.
