Barcelona defender Gerard Pique endures whistles for Spain win

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique went through a mixed night as Spain defeated World Cup qualifying opponents Albania.

Even with his first few touches of the ball, the controversial Catalan was whistled after he publicly stated his support for an independence referendum to be held in his home region last weekend.

As the starting XI was read out over the loudspeaker, he was the only player not applauded. Whilst Sergio Ramos, Isco and Marco Asensio were cheered, Pique was jeered by most.

Real Madrid and Spain captain Sergio Ramos attempted to ease the tension before the game.

Ramos supported Pique on the field, embracing him just before kick off as jeers and whistles continued throughout the first half.
