Atletico Madrid chief Miguel Angel Gil Marin says Real Madrid tried for Diego Forlan last month.
Real's offer was not suitable to the club, and their advances were rejected.
He said: "They wanted Diego to replaced the injured [Gonzalo] Higuain.
"But Atletico said it was not an option nor reasonable to allow him to go on loan, given his age and prestige."
