Danny Simpson's future at Newcastle United is clouded.

The Sunday Sun says the right-back was on the verge of penning a five-year deal earlier in the summer, but United are now looking at alternative options.

Simpson would dearly love to stay at St James' Park but there was interest from Aston Villa, Celtic and QPR in him over the summer and he would not be happy to sit on the bench after two seasons as first-choice right-back.
