Alderweireld backs Tottenham teammate Vertonghen to fill left-back role

Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld has backed his team-mate Jan Vertonghen to operate as a left-back ahead of his sides Champions league encounter against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

Ben Davies, who has been operating regularly at left-back following Danny Rose's injury layoff in January, had to miss Spurs win against Bournemouth during the weekend and he has reportedly yet to recover.

The experienced Vertonghen had to fill in at left-back on the day. And although Rose has recovered from injury, he is not match fit and will not play the full game when Spurs take on Madrid.

Alderweireld has backed the Belgian to succeed in the role and said: "I think Jan showed that, if the manager wants him there, he can play there. So it's no problem I think."
