Dick Advocaat felt his Sunderland side should have made more of their chances against Chelsea on Sunday.
The Black Cats lost 3-1 after leading through Steven Fletcher's 26th-minute header and having nine shots on target and Advocaat believed the Wearside club deserved more off after seeing off relegation during the week.
"There was no need to lose 3-1 because we had enough opportunities to score," said the Dutchman.
"For me it was important to see a team that was free of relegation, fear and that they were not scared to do something."
Sunderland finished the Premier League season in 16th position, three points clear of the relegation zone.
