Wout Faes grateful to be Leicester player: I was lucky Fofana wanted to leave

Wout Faes says he's grateful to be a Leicester City player.

The Belgium defender's vocal leadership has been a highlight in Leicester's revival.

“I need to do this because it's in my nature to command the players and help the team," he said. “When I speak a lot it's better for my game because I stay really focused.

“The players pick it up from me. They understand I want to help the team. It's all good guys. We're a real unit and now results are also coming.

“The manager gave me a lot of confidence and it is important I try to repay him in my performances. But the whole team is defending well together. We've been a real unit in the last few weeks and we have to continue in this way.

“We have to go game by game and try to get as many points as possible before the World Cup. We're in a good streak.

“The quality is here. Even in the games we didn't get points, the way we played was not bad. It's about rewarding yourself and defending well. That is what we have been doing in the last weeks. We can aim higher than where we are now."

Rodgers had hoped to “shake up" his squad with five or six new recruits in the summer, but Faes was the only outfield player through the door. But the centre-back's infectious personality and gratitude to be at the club have lifted spirits.

Faes added: “It's amazing, I'm very happy to be here. You can see it in my game. I enjoy being here and trying to prove myself.

“I was lucky someone [Wesley Fofana] left the club to join another team, they wanted me to replace him and it was a no brainer to come here. I'm very happy to be here and try to convey the confidence in my performances."
