Warren Joyce admits he spoke with Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson before leaving Manchester United for Wigan Athletic.

He had been in charge of Manchester United's reserve teams for a decade, helping to forge the careers of Paul Pogba and England stars Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Danny Welbeck.

Joyce said: “I had a chat with Jose and I appreciate the advice he gave me. And I spoke to Sir Alex and he was saying trust your gut instincts.

“You only have one crack at life and if you've got a burning dream, you don't want to pass it up."
