Walters wants regular starting berth with Stoke

Jon Walters has stated he wants to be starting for Stoke City next season after losing his regular place in the side. In comments reported by the Stoke Sentinel, the 30 year old is quoted as saying: "I've got two years left on my contract and I want to be playing.

"In the last eight weeks of the season I didn't play much, but I'm not a player who wants to be sitting on the bench.

"On the last day (at West Brom) I played in my favoured position (as a central striker), so we will see come next season.

"I'm a player who wants to be playing, and if I'm not we will have to address that situation."

Walters accepts there will be increased competition up front, with Stoke hoping to finalise a deal for Hannover striker Mame Biram Diouf.

The Republic of Ireland international added: "I'm sure we will sign new players in the summer as well and hopefully we can improve on what we've done over the past year.

"We've got our highest league position and highest points total, and hopefully we can push on from this.

"We are not happy with staying ninth. We are a team that wants to keep progressing and bettering ourselves next year.

"It was a good season. It was difficult in some stages, but as we've set out we've achieved our targets and it's enjoyable when you do that.

"Every manager is different, and that was the case this season. We showed it towards the end of the year in the way we kept possession."
