Jan Vertonghen has welcomed his countryman Toby Alderweireld to Tottenham despite legal threats from Southampton to scupper the £10m deal.

Atletico defender Alderweireld has found himself the subject of a transfer battle in recent days after Southampton - who the 26-year-old spent last season on loan with - threatened the Spanish side with legal action if the defender joins another team.

"Toby is welcome," Vertonghen is quoted as having told Belgian publication Het Nieuwsblad.

"There are already a lot of good players around with us, but every footballer with quality is welcome."
