Venables joins call for Liverpool ace Gerrard to be made outright England captain

Former England boss Terry Venables says Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard should keep the Three Lions captaincy.

Venables says Fabio Capello must make Gerrard permanent captain ahead of Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.

In his column for The Sun, El Tel wrote: "The Italian has some big calls to make with James Milner suspended, Theo Walcott and Jermain Defoe injured and John Terry, Frank Lampard and maybe even Rio Ferdinand fit again.

"But I believe there is one position he should leave unchanged. The captaincy.

"Vice-captain Steven Gerrard, who has deputised for injured Ferdinand in the last seven matches, must keep the armband.

"This is nothing against the Manchester United defender, who was promoted to the role in February in the wake of the John Terry scandal. He insists the armband is his and he wants it back when he returns, whenever that may be.

"But a lot has changed since Rio got the job seven months ago.

"For a start, he has managed only 1½ games in the 10 England have played.

"Ferdinand is an excellent leader and a superb character to have in the dressing room. But captains, especially England's, need to be motivating their team-mates on the pitch and not from the stands."
