Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has urged fans to be patient with new arrival Cody Gakpo.

Van Dijk was asked about the former PSV Eindhoven attacker after last night's win against Leicester City.

Asked what Gakpo can offer the Reds, the Dutchman said: "Hopefully a lot.

"He is a good player. I know what it's like to come in January, so we have to give him time, and so will the real fans.

"I talked to him and could only say good things, because I have enjoyed my time here and have been very successful. If it had been me, it would have been an easy decision to make.

"I didn't have to convince him, but if he had any questions, I could have answered."
